About Me

My journey began in 2006 with my own search to restore and recover. I had been supporting my son Matt’s journey through the special education system, he has autistic spectrum difficulties, and I had got lost somewhere between bureaucracy and overwhelm. I needed to find myself again and just really needed to feel better. So my search began…

Therapies

In researching therapies that would support both my son’s and my healing journey I gathered a toolkit of practices that offer powerful release from emotional stress, physical stress and trauma, safely and effectively. I have found all these tools personally healing and I feel honoured to be able to share these with you. To date all clients have found great relief and liberation using them.

TRE® (Tension & Trauma Release) Exercises

I am a Certified Advanced TRE Practitioner. TRE® (Tension and Trauma Release Exercises) are simple comfortable but profoundly powerful practices that help us release trauma held in our bodies from the past whether it is emotional or physical. TRE was designed by Traumatologist Dr David Berceli PhD. For the past 25 years Dr Berceli has developed and safely used this methodology. He has taught many thousands of people from diverse cultural backgrounds throughout the world. TRE has provided relief in conflict zones and with large populations of survivors following natural disasters. TRE has proved effective for those who were experiencing or recovering from trauma, PTSD and its sometimes debilitating symptoms. TRE is reassuring and self-empowering. It can be equally effective in releasing everyday tension and stress. TRE reactivates our natural instinctive trauma release mechanism of tremoring and shaking. With our highly developed Prefrontal Cortex humans have misinterpreted and suppressed this shaking response, misunderstanding it as a sign of trauma rather than a release from trauma and so we have lost our instinctive re-boot.The result of the TRE is that we reactivate neurogenic tremors allowing us to naturally release the deep tension and emotions held in our tissues…….without having to talk about them or revisit them. Thanks so much for introducing me to TRE, I’ve done it quite a lot on my own and I really do feel it’s making a difference to my stress levels and well being.”

Yoga

Hatha Yoga and Meditation practices propped, strengthened and soothed me on my journey so completely that I wanted to pass their gift on to others.

In 2012 I completed my two year Yoga Teacher Training course with the Devon School of Yoga tutored by Duncan Hulin and his inspirational group of tutors. I am now a member of the Independent Yoga Network. Since qualifying I have travelled to India to further my yoga journey. Taking a course in yoga and meditation at Phool Chatti Ashram in Rishikesh and studying at Sivananda Ashram Neyyar Dam in Kerala. In 2012 I studied with Dr Bo Forbes Clinical Psychologist and Yoga Therapist, this enabled me to understand more about how we hold emotional memories and traumas in our bodies. Our issues are in our tissues! In 2014 I qualified as a Relax and Renew Restorative Yoga Trainer under the tutorage of Judith Hanson Lasater and have been delighted to assist Judith on her Relax and Renew courses in London.

Having experienced profound restorative peace during an iRest retreat with James Reeves in 2013, it led me to complete Richard Miller’s iRest training to Level 2. I was deeply touched by the practice and its profound healing potential. I then completed my Total Yoga Nidra teacher training through the Yoga Campus with Uma Dinsmore Tuli and Nirlipta Tuli.Total Yoga Nidra has expanded my understand of the many aspects of this powerful technique. I am passionate about the therapeutic benefits of Yoga Nidra. In 2016 I completed my Neurogenic Yoga teachers certification in order to invite neurogenic trauma and tension release through gentle yoga.

Yoga is for everyone. The Yoga I teach is fitted to the reality of where you are now, both physically and emotionally. So whatever is going on for you today is the perfect day to start. Yoga is not exclusive or painful or impossible, it can be as easy as sitting still and listening to your breath. With regular practice you will experience a gentle unfolding of your mind and body and releasing of tensions.

It is great to be a witness to the progression of my clients and the impact yoga has on their well-being. I teach from complete beginners to intermediate levels of yoga .My classes include breath work (pranayama) yoga nidra (lying guided visualization type meditation) and classical meditation.

I teach Slow Flow Hatha Yoga to small groups and 1:1. I also offer Yoga for friends. So, if you have a group of chums who would like to get together for a relaxing Yoga session in Exeter. I have a wonderful space at Exeter Natural Health Centre to share Yoga with you. Please contact me for details.

Neurogenic Yoga

Neurogenic Yoga™ is a revolutionary technique in trauma healing and stress reduction.
This practice combines yoga asana and pranayama with the body’s natural, therapeutic shaking response. This shaking response in humans, much the same as the instinctual shaking in animals, is the nervous system’s way of discharging long-held tension and trauma, in order to restore the body to wholeness.,When we experience ANY stress, tension, anxiety or trauma an instinctive response directed by an area of our primitive brain reads this as a threat to our survival . It causes our body to contract and our brain to activate the release of stress hormones. After the traumatic event we have an instinctive response of vibration or shaking in the body. Animals in the wild instinctively shake to release trauma energy following any threatening experience. We have the same genetically encoded mechanism but with our advanced thinking brains we have misinterpreted the shaking as a sign of trauma rather than a process of recovery, So negative beliefs around what it means to allow ourselves to shake, tremor, or show vulnerability, have conditioned us out of this innate release mechanism at a very early age. Neurogenic Yoga reawakens our body’s intrinsic release mechanism for optimal health.

Neurogenic Yoga is a simple, gentle and profound practice that facilities the lengthening and relaxation of the psoas muscle and the release of physical and emotional stress and tension. During a Neurogenic Yoga™ practice, we safely self induce therapeutic vibration using yoga postures and breath. Often vibration begins in the legs and may spread throughout the entire body. This method is based on Dr. David Berceli’s technique of Trauma Releasing Exercises® (TRE®).

Who can benefit from Neurogenic Yoga™?

If you have ever had to speak in front of an audience and found your knees shaking, been in a car accident and found yourself shaking afterwards, or found yourself angry and had shaking in your belly or other body parts, then you have experienced this type of vibration. Since this shaking mechanism in the muscles is part of our natural behaviour as humans, everyone can benefit. These self-induced therapeutic tremors increase the resiliency of the body because they cause deep relaxation that naturally reduces stress levels and muscle contraction. These vibrations can release emotions ranging from mild upset to severe anxiety whether it is caused by work stress, excessive worry, conflict in relationships, physical stresses, or traumas from accidents. Additionally, tremoring has been reported to reduce and eliminate pain, increases mobility, and aid healing of recent and past injuries.
Whether you are a parent/spouse who would like more patience with your family, a survivor of violence, emotional trauma, an accident, a soldier suffering with PTSD, or simply someone who wants to become more resilient and healthier, you can benefit from Neurogenic Yoga™.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga nidra is a practice that’s becoming increasingly popular as both a form of meditation and a mind-body therapy. It is a systematic form of guided relaxation likened to a cross between guided meditation and therapeutic hypnotherapy which easily and smoothly relaxes you into a state of calm awareness.
It is deeply relaxing, safe and nurturing. Practitioners say that it often brings immediate physical benefits, such as reduced stress and better sleep, and that it has the potential to heal psychological wounds. As a meditation practice, it can offer a profound sense of peace and well-being.
Yoga nidra takes the practitioner to a deeply relaxing state between wakefulness and sleep, known as a hypnagogic state. In this state we are more able to adjust our reactions to our life’s problems. The adjustments are done through gentle suggestion during the guided visualisation and body awareness. By meeting difficulties in this relaxed state and blending our difficult emotions alongside positive visualisations it changes the way our body and mind react to negative emotions. Eventually through regular practice the positive suggestions shine more than the presence of the negative thoughts, and so dilute the negative emotional charge until it is reduced to a comfortable level.

Jo weaves yoga Nidra into her TRE and Neurogenic yoga classes as a deep relaxation to complete the session.

EFT Emotional Freedom Technique

I am an Certified Accredited Advanced Level 3 EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Practitioner in Meridian Tapping Energy Psychology. she completed her advanced training under the tutorage of Professor Tony Stewart. Tony Stewart is a Professor in Public Health for the National Health Service and an NHS Consultant. He has achieved great success using EFT with patients presenting a wide range of emotional, physical and traumatic issues.
The way we cope and react to life’s events is driven by how past experiences are stored in our subconscious. EFT can change the way we perceive our memories or traumatic events by releasing the emotional hold they have on us.

Client feedback

“I’m actually on a bit of a ‘high’ after your session -I am feeling so positive about absolutely everything!”
“Within a short time I’ve found EFT to be very beneficial, and am grateful to Jo for both introducing me to the concept and guiding me through my first experiences of it. I find the whole process to be quite straightforward and that has enabled me to experience increased relaxation for the first time in many years. I’m pleased to have found something so effective that is so simple”

Energy Psychology

EFT also known as Energy Psychology is a process of releasing energy blocks in our system caused by negative past events. EFT involves tapping with the fingertips on specific energy points on the hands, head and chest – corresponding to Chinese meridian points – whilst focusing on a specific problem, emotion or memory. This sends an electromagnetic impulse to our brain releasing the emotional charge connected to that memory or problem. The effect of this release, is that our subconscious programming is changed . The memory remains but without the hijacking influence it had on our life and emotions. Once EFT releases the power the past event held over us, we naturally make a shift in our perception and find we are able to interpret life in a more positive way.
